delft_trees2Delft "Go-Green" Tree Planting

Citrine Construction has been responsible for the electrification of the new dwellings erected for the residents of the N2 Gateway Delft area. The company felt that the planting of trees would be the most appropriate gift to the residents, as it would both serve to both beautify the environment and offset carbon emissions.

A partnership with Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA), South Africa’s national greening organisation, was born out of this desire to give something back to the Delft community. After several meetings FTFA implemented a project which aimed to beautify the environment by planting trees, create temporary employment for unemployed volunteers in the area, create a micro climate and offset carbon emissions.

A donation of 1 000 indigenous shade trees was made to green 1 000 Delft households and provide short-term employment for a number of residents who were trained by FTFA as community-based educators.

This initiative was coordinated with the efforts of the local and provincial government offices, notably the MEC for Housing, which ensured the success of the project. The result was an overwhelming and enthusiastic response from the residents who were proud to receive and take ownership of the project.
